SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 25th April. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Deputy of the Common, Rafael Yanes, convened a meeting with representatives from the ‘Campaign for Inclusive Playgrounds’, who delivered letters written by students from various educational institutions in El Sauzal. The letters urged for the construction of tailored play areas for children with disabilities in all Tenerife municipalities, as they are currently scarce on the island.
Mariano Pérez, the mayor of El Sauzal, a municipality with few of these facilities, also participated in the meeting.
The Association’s president, Ana Mengíbar, highlighted that in certain Tenerife municipalities, children with disabilities face restrictions in accessing play areas due to lack of adherence to accessibility regulations. “Failure to adjust playgrounds for accessibility means a breach of Decree 505/2007 and its subsequent Ministerial Order 851/2021,” she stated.
The Mayor of El Sauzal expressed that he aims to extend beyond having just one adapted park in the municipality. In line with this, he announced plans for constructing a new tailored playground near the General Highway to benefit residents of Tacoronte and La Matanza as well.
The Deputy of the Common pledged to propose to the Canary Islands Government the introduction of a funding scheme to facilitate the construction of tailor-made playgrounds for children with disabilities in all municipalities across the islands. He also commended the Mayor of El Sauzal and the municipality for setting a prime example in terms of accessibility.
