Arico, located in the southern part of Tenerife, has become the second municipality on the island, after Fasnia, to impose restrictions on water consumption among its residents. This decision was made after the Council’s approval during a plenary session last Friday, March 1, calling on the Island Water Council to take steps to declare a water emergency on the island.
Mayor of Arico, Olivia Delgado Oval, has informed residents about the necessary measures being taken due to the prolonged drought, a situation she deems “very serious,” and in response to the actions initiated by the Cabildo. The following measures have been implemented:
- Prohibition of car washing, except at gas stations.
- Prohibition of facade washing.
- Prohibition of filling swimming pools, ponds, reservoirs, or tanks.
- Prohibition of showers on beaches.
- Prohibition of using drinking water for irrigation.
- Prohibition of installing new pond water meters.
The City Council highlights that the island’s reservoirs are currently at approximately 30% of their capacity, whereas they should ideally be at 70% during this period. Therefore, citizens are urged to responsibly use and conserve water.
