The housekeepers demonstrate this Friday in Tenerife for their labor rights

The maids return to the streets this Friday. The workers have called for a demonstration this January 12 starting at 4:30 p.m. in Arona. Specifically, the protest will begin at the intersection between Avenida Antonio Domínguez and Avenida Arquitecto Gómez Cuesta. ”We are not slaves,” they remember in the call.

The Workers Commissions union has joined this demonstration. In a statement, it warned of the ”serious” precariousness of housekeepers, who during their working lives have to self-medicate and cannot retire. For this reason, Workers’ Commissions joins the mobilization, given the lack of investment by employers in preventive matters and the apathy to provide them with an effective solution.

In summer, the death of a housekeeper in Tenerife shocked the entire sector. Her name was Belén, she was 45 years old and she died at her workplace. She was a housekeeper and had been hired by a Temporary Employment Company (ETT), according to officials at the Los Olivos aparthotel (in Adeje). From the establishment they explained that the forensic doctor certified the cause of death as “natural”, which occurred in the early hours of the morning.

For this reason, unions demand that governments and especially employers invest in prevention. “This mobilization is just a starting point towards a fight that this time will not be stopped by any yellow union,” Workers’ Commissions stated in the note.
