SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Oct. 12 (EUROPA PRESS) –

A group of representatives from different environmental groups and those related to the conservation of natural heritage have met to achieve better coordination for legal action, obtain and share information and carry out actions related to natural spaces.

The groups –Salvar la Tejita, Ben Magec Ecologistas en Acción, ASIREM Network, Association for the Conservation of Canarian Biodiversity, Canarina Foundation, Los Silos-Isla Baja Platform, Agents of Change, Ecologist Coordinator El Rincón-Ecologistas en Acción, Foundation Telesforo Bravo and Juan Coello, Assembly in Defense of Our Land and ATAN – warn in a joint statement of the “rapid degradation” of the islands due to climate change, mass tourism, legal and illegal tourist developments, the absence of effective management of invasive species or poor management of natural spaces and threatened species, among others.

“We see the need to act now or we will arrive too late,” they point out.

In his opinion, environmental problems entail a loss of biodiversity that society cannot afford and, in addition, a “worsening” of the quality of life of the island’s inhabitants “whose deterioration is already very evident.”

Thus, during the meeting, different topics were prioritized, among which it is worth highlighting the creation of a working group that initially includes 10 groups and that will coordinate decision-making to work for a better future for the Canary Islands.

“The objective is to put a stop to the unsustainable actions of the different governments, establish guidelines aimed at the defense of the territory at all levels, demand active management that allows the recovery of the biodiversity of natural ecosystems so that they can protect us from the threats of climate change and work to promote policies that favor the maintenance of agricultural and livestock activities in existing rural areas,” they comment.
