Puertos de Tenerife, shortlisted for the European awards for maritime decarbonization

Puertos de Tenerife is one of the international port entities shortlisted within the framework of the Maritime Decarbonisation Europe 2023 Conference to compete in the modality of ports that have demonstrated leadership in the implementation of initiatives at their docks whose objective is to promote maritime decarbonisation.

This meeting point for companies in the maritime sector related to this environmental field, has nominated, together with our ports, those of Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Barcelona and San Diego, and it will be through a public voting procedure added to the demonstration of results of the initiatives presented as decided by the winner of the call.

In the case of Puertos de Tenerife, its nomination is based on the successful implementation of infrastructures for power supply to ships from land; the supply of Liquefied Natural Gas and pilot tests of electrical energy through hydrogen fuel cells.

Thus, it should be remembered that the port of La Gomera, dependent on the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Port Authority, was the first national port to supply electricity to ships from land through the OPS system, already implemented and operational also in the port facilities of La Palma, for passenger traffic, and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, for passenger ships and oil platforms.

Likewise, in the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, LNG has been supplied to ships, specifically to the state-of-the-art ecological cruise ship AidaNova, and, more recently, it hosted a test supply of electricity generated by a hydrogen cell to the ship Punta Salinas , from Salvamente Marítimo, an initiative within the framework of the EVERYWH2RE project coordinated by Puertos del Estado and financed by the European community.
