The Cabildo de Tenerife, through the delegated area of Citizen Participation and Diversity, has launched a campaign to promote volunteering among the elderly on the Island under the slogan ‘You are the greatest [email protected] connected’.
The campaign is coordinated through the Tenerife Isla Solidaria program, dependent on Sinpromi, and its objective is to encourage its collaboration with entities in the specific volunteer activities available to this group.
The CEO of the area, Nauzet Gugliotta, has highlighted the importance of this campaign “with everything that older people can contribute to their community and to society in general.”
He also added that it represents “an opportunity for this social group, which will be able to enrich their free time by participating in solidarity actions, with the benefits for development and personal enrichment that volunteering entails.”
For Gugliotta, “volunteering has a positive impact on the elderly, it contributes to their active aging and to alleviate the loneliness in which they often find themselves, and it strengthens their self-esteem by feeling that their contribution to the community is recognized”.
“This initiative benefits not only the elderly, but also the population with which they interact, with all the life experience, knowledge and skills that they can put at the service of the community,” he added.
The CEO explained that for the image of the campaign, different elderly people have been used, “who have lent their faces and testimony to promote social awareness and extend an appeal to the public to help motivate the elderly in their environment and encourage them to participate in this type of action, with which their free time is enriched and they get out of their routine”.
Also, through the staff of Tenerife Isla Solidaria, meetings are being held with groups and associations of the elderly from the respective regions of the island, benchmarks for their special involvement with the elderly, to disseminate this initiative and try to reach the largest number of elderly people. possible.
The Volunteer Office will also provide an advisory and guidance service to help older people choose the best collaboration option, both as a group and individually.
“Right now they have different volunteer opportunities available, to collaborate, according to their concerns and preferences, with people with disabilities, people undergoing cancer treatment, with mothers in vulnerable situations, with children and families, in libraries, in computer courses for the elderly , among other options,” explained Gugliotta.

In order to expand the volunteering options for the elderly through the Tenerife Isla Solidaria program, it has also been planned to mobilize the business fabric, locating companies that want to promote the participation of the retired or near-retirement workforce through corporate volunteering, as well as to professional associations, to recruit older people from various professional branches to take part in voluntary actions.
