In order to improve the quality of life and promote active aging of the elderly, the City Council of La Victoria de Acentejo, with the collaboration of the Cabildo de Tenerife, has launched a new program of activities that will be carried out throughout the year. year in all neighborhoods of the municipality.
The initiative, called ‘Reactivate-El Club del Mayor’, seeks to enhance the capabilities of older victorieros and victorieras with adequate training and under specialized technical supervision. The Victoriero mayor, Juan Antonio García, highlights the multiple benefits that this program entails for the participants: “We not only seek to maintain and improve their physical and mental conditions, but also greater emotional well-being and integration, since we motivate our elders to leave their homes and interact, thus combating the isolation that they often suffer”.
‘The Club del Mayor’ started a few days ago and already has around 100 participants, who attend the different municipal social centers one morning a week (La Resbala, La Vera, Los Arroyos, San Juan and the Centro de la Third Age in the hull area). “Little by little -adds the mayor-, more people will join, as the program is consolidated.” “In addition, as soon as the works of the Santo Domingo cultural center are finished, which are already being completed in the lower part of the town, more elderly people from this neighborhood will also sign up, who now have to travel to other centers,” he adds.
In this sense, Juan Antonio García points out that in the good reception of this initiative “it has been essential to bring the program closer to the different neighborhoods to promote accessibility and the assistance of our elderly to the activities, as well as to achieve the revitalization of the centers civic hours in the morning.
A team of three professionals is in charge of the cognitive stimulation and ‘neurogym’ sessions, which help to enhance the functionality of the brain, prevent neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, increase self-esteem and improve response capacity in the day to day.
