SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Dec. 23 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Cabildo de Tenerife has published an illustration made by the artist Aron Morales to celebrate and commemorate the celebration of Christmas, based on a piece of Spanish popular clothing, leggings, one of whose modalities are preserved in the Canary Islands.
It is a garment used to cover the legs from the knees to the top of the foot, partially covering the footwear.
“This year the illustration that we have disseminated pays homage to the work carried out with leather, specifically in the leggings”, indicated the Minister of Employment, Socioeconomic Development and External Action, Carmen Luz Baso.
He added that hand in hand with the Tenerife Traditional Clothing Sector Council, and as every year, they take advantage of these dates to disseminate an image that has two functions, its own as a Christmas greeting and another that is to value the intangible heritage of our craft.
Leggings were traditionally made from wool or leather. In the case of the one represented in this illustration, a leather model has been used, typical of men, made up of several pieces sewn together, with a curious lateral closure system of interlocking tabs and buttonholes. This type of accessory was decorated with leather of various colors and qualities, using cuts and cuts.
This type of leggings is used to dress many of the traditional and typical costumes of the island of Tenerife such as that of La Orotava.
In the same way, the illustration aims to simulate the die-cutting of the leather pieces, forming in the center one of the most representative elements of Canarian Christmas, the nativity scenes, using the same elements and shapes that are used to decorate the leggings.
Traditional culture, inherited from our ancestors, identifies and differentiates social groups as people. Preserving the purity of traditions has always been a source of pride for the people of the Islands and a constant in the multiple popular demonstrations that take place throughout the entire region.
Traditional clothing is part of the culture and in this sense, Tenerife has a rich heritage of clothing. For this reason, “we wanted to commemorate and solemnize these festivities, with this illustration highlighting the importance of valuing and disseminating our intangible heritage for its conservation, always respecting our traditions, promoting the proper use of typical clothing and helping to its correct preservation”, concluded the counselor.
