SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 15th May. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Ministry of Universities, Science, Innovation, and Culture of the Government of the Canary Islands, under the General Directorate of Culture and Cultural Heritage, has announced on Wednesday in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands (BOC) a resolution to initiate a hearing procedure for those interested in the revocation of the Order that approved the list of symbols, streets, monuments, and references to the Francoist era in the Canary Islands.
The decision by the Canary Islands Government follows a request made by the Cultural Department of the City Council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife for the withdrawal of the Order approved by the former Department of Education, Universities, Culture, and Sports of the Canary Islands.
The resolution initiates a period of ten (10) business days for interested parties to present arguments, documents, and justifications relevant to the revocation process.
The inventory of Francoist relics in the Canary Islands, specifically concentrated in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, consists of a three-thousand-page document detailing symbols, streets, monuments, and mentions from the Franco era in the Tenerife capital. The research was conducted by historian Maisa Navarro, with assistance from expert scholars Ricardo A. Guerra Palmero and Yolanda Peralta Sierra.
The catalogue was challenged by the legal team of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council, resulting in multiple temporary suspensions by the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands (TSJC) of the catalog approved by the Ministry of Education, Universities, Culture, and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands on 4th November 2022.
