This coming Saturday, on May 18th, La Laguna is gearing up to celebrate Family Day, an exciting and entertaining event featuring a wide range of activities across different parts of the city throughout the day. The details of this event were unveiled on Wednesday at a press conference by the Mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, and the Social Welfare Councilor, María Cruz. Also in attendance were the Sports Councilor, Badel Albelo, along with the Commerce Councilor, Estefanía Díaz, the Culture Councilor, Leticia Villegas, and the President of La Laguna Commercial Zone, Iván Pérez. The Department of Education and Youth, led by Sergio Eiroa, is also joining hands to make this event a success.
Luis Yeray Gutiérrez extended a warm invitation to everyone to “actively partake in a day brimming with diverse activities suitable for the entire family. La Laguna is all set to dazzle and showcase itself as a vibrant city, dedicated to revitalization and highly attuned to the societal diversity around us.” The Mayor expressed his gratitude towards the teamwork across various departments, especially acknowledging the Department of Social Welfare and its collaborative efforts with diverse groups and entities in curating “an agenda that caters to all segments of the society present in La Laguna.”
María Cruz affirmed that Family Day in La Laguna “stands out as a grand festive occasion that we are fostering as a communal space for engaging in recreational, cultural, and sporting activities suitable for all age groups.” She underscored the coordinated efforts of various municipal departments and social groups within the municipality in devising “a richly diverse, appealing, inclusive, and accessible programme.”
The festivities of Family Day will kick off on Friday with a special performance by the singer and songwriter Sara Socas at the Espacio Aguere Cultural. She will be presenting her latest album in an event that will also feature performances by comedian David García of the Castle.
Saturday’s activities will be spread across five themed zones in the city, running from 10:30 a.m. until 8:00 p.m., all in consideration of the residents of the town, as stated by the Mayor.
Heraclio Sánchez Street will host a major portion of the family-oriented activities including inflatable castles, escape rooms, caricaturists, emergency vehicle exhibits, karaoke sessions, PlayStation games, and family-centric workshops, among other attractions.
The Fantasy Zone, located at Hermano Ramón Square, will be dedicated predominantly to children. Here, children can engage in singing games, clown performances, puppet shows by the Tragaluz company, storytelling sessions by the oral narrator Antonio Conejo, and magical performances by Héctor Fernández. All these activities will have sign language interpreters present, and a designated area for breastfeeding will be arranged.
Cathedral Square will host the Functional Diversity Zone alongside the sports section, encompassing various workshops led by associations, a popular photo booth featuring the giant King Kong figure, and multiple spaces for sporting activities.
Plaza de la Junta Suprema and Calle San Agustín will be home to the rock and geek markets, as well as a section dedicated to promoting different associations. Additionally, guided tours around the town will commence from this area.
The fifth zone will be a homage to the circus world, situated at the Aneja School and the Javier Fernández Quesada Student Park. Attendees can witness acrobatics, juggling and clown performances, as well as enjoy giant dinosaurs and Jurassic World-themed entertainment.
Simultaneously, four guided tours will be conducted throughout the day, taking participants to the key heritage sites within the historic centre of the city, all tours commencing from Plaza del Adelantado.
The Social Welfare section will feature two designated orange spots to facilitate the participation of individuals with disabilities, along with two purple locations earmarked as safe spaces for the duration of the event.
