the mayor of Santa Cruz of Tenerifethe nationalist José Manuel Bermúdez, does not hide his anger at the choice of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria as the only venue in the Islands for the events that are organized during the semester of the Spanish presidency of the EU in 2023. For this reason, it has sent a letter to the State demanding that the capital of Tenerife be included in the list of cities, alleging that this municipality “It is the same capital as Las Palmas de Gran Canaria”which is among the cities in which the aforementioned meetings will take place. The councilor chicharrero has expressed his “surprise” because the capital of the island of Tenerife and co-capital of the Canary Islands has not been included among the proposed cities. “On this list, out of 25 cities, there is Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, which shares the capital of the Canary Islands with Santa Cruz de Tenerife,” insists the mayor.
“This State proposal demonstrates the lack of absolute knowledge of the reality of the Islands, of the different sensitivities and of the need to maintain the balance between the different territories that make it up,” said José Manuel Bermúdez. The mayor also demands that the president of the Government of the Canary Islands, the socialist Ángel Víctor Torres, “from the same party that has prepared the aforementioned list, present the same proposal in Madrid and that, as president of all the canaries, guarantee the balance territory in the Islands.
The nationalist José Manuel Bermúdez trusts that this decision “will be corrected immediately” and that the rest of the institutions of the Canary Islands, “especially the Cabildo de Tenerife and the Presidency of the Government of the Canary Islands, both led by the same Socialist Party that has left Santa Cruz off this list, are capable of modifying this situation in the following days”.
The Organizing Committee of the Spanish Presidency of the EU published yesterday the list of cities that the Government will propose to host community events.
