The process begins to rehabilitate the Camino Real del Sur, a historic trail

The Güímar City Council and the Tenerife Council have joined together to begin the rehabilitation of the Camino Real del Sura historic path used by hiking lovers and which previously of urban development was used by the population. Representatives of the two administrations visited the area to see some of the necessary improvements on the ground and plan how to develop the project.

The Department of Rural Development, headed by Nayra Caraballero, has taken on the drafting of the technical project for the approval of the Camino Real del Sur as it passes through Güímar. Caraballero, in addition to pointing out that this is the first step for the creation of the municipality’s trail networkstated that this work involves carrying out an exhaustive analysis of the terrain to identify signage needs in the sections of the itinerary and prepare the necessary documentation to request approval of the trail.

Once this phase is completed, the Natural Environment Area of the Cabildo de Tenerife will outline the stages to improve this route with a view to establishing a calendar for the start of the works. Qedro Millán, island director of the Environmentpointed out that the Cabildo is going to begin collaborating with the Güímar City Council in the rehabilitation of the Camino Real de Güímar “due to the historical and heritage importance of the road.”

This historic path once connected the entire south of Tenerife and still preserves cobbled sections that demonstrate the effort and quality with which these communication routes were worked. “The road has enormous potential from a landscape point of view and geographical interest that makes it attractive to travel for both the local population and visitors,” underlined Pedro Millán.

The section of the Camino Real del Sur that runs between Fasnia and the town of Güímar is part of the historical trail that goes from Granadilla de Abona to Güímar. Its rehabilitation involves facilitating transit through areas of great tourist and heritage attraction on the Island, so that both visitors and residents can continue enjoying it in optimal conditions.

“Magnificent views”

Gustavo Pérez, mayor of Güímar, pointed out the importance of recovering the Camino Real as “a way to rescue and highlight local history and highlights that users will be able to enjoy a tour full of references to our town with magnificent views.” “The coordination between the Cabildo and the City Council makes us present a comprehensive recovery plan for the Camino Real that will bring great benefits to the municipality,” concluded Gustavo Pérez.
