The Town Hall Square of La Orotava will display the great tapestry in the celebration of the Infraoctave of Corpus, on June 23. It will be «the carpet of desires, feelings and illusion. Religious, but also of a social and human nature, ”said its director, Domingo González Espósito, who explained that it will represent the desire to end the invasion and war in Ukraine and the mistreatment of the planet; the feeling of unity of the canaries with La Palma and of seeing San Isidro represented in this work, and the illusion of recovering the festivities and celebrating the 175th anniversary of the flower carpets.
The silhouette of La Palma will be in the central tapestry, in the borders and in black, which will be made only with volcano ash. In addition, the Corpus entrance to the square will have a Mazo arch – between 5 and 6 meters high – as symbol of regional solidarity with palmeros.
The end of the Ukrainian war will, as a purpose, be represented with four life-size figures placed around the central tapestry; two of them will be made with the colors of the flag of the country that invaded Russia.
The central tapestry will represent Jesus in an everyday scene. The intention is to “see and feel” the human part of him. Coinciding with the 400th anniversary of his canonization, the figure of San Isidro will appear for the first time in an ogival-shaped tapestry within the triangle that symbolizes the Holy Trinity.
To commemorate the 175th anniversary of the flower carpets, the first carpet will be made with its original measurements (3.50 x 2.50 varas), half of flowers and the other, of land. In addition, dates, eucalyptus bagas and other elements used in the first carpets of the square will be used, recreating the one from 1922 and with a nod to the one from 1920. Likewise, two small tapestries in two circles will represent a baby penguin – trapped in remains of fishing nets– and a turtle –swimming among plastic spills–. They will delve into climate change and serve as a link to the next two carpets.
