Roberto Herrera: The Heart of Carnival
Born in La Isleta, the neighbourhood deeply rooted in the Carnival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Roberto Herrera embodies the spirit of celebration. As the son of a father who kept a wig and a dress in the boot of the car for any occasion, Roberto’s connection to the carnival began at a young age. He initially joined a murga, a type of musical troupe, and later became part of the comparsa Los Maracaibos. However, it was on stage, microphone in hand, that his name became one of the most recognisable in the Archipelago.
As a television presenter on TVE Canarias, with over 2,500 programmes to his name, Roberto has been the voice of countless drag queen galas, beauty queen events, and carnival activities across Maspalomas, Las Palmas, and beyond. His approachable style, humour, and professionalism have made him a key figure in the community, although he prefers the terms “known” or “popular” over “famous.”
The Emotional Carnival Opening
In this interview, Roberto reflects on his poignant role as the carnival’s pregonero, which coincided with a challenging period in his life due to the passing of his partner. According to local police, this event attracted the largest crowd ever seen in Plaza de Santa Ana.
“I don’t know if people call it ‘nerves’. For me, it’s more about respect,” he states. “If I didn’t feel excited about going on stage—whether in Las Palmas, at the Carnival, or another event throughout the year—then I wouldn’t enjoy this profession as much. There’s always that thrill of wanting everything to go well and for the audience to appreciate both my work and that of my colleagues.”
Reflections on Being Pregonero
Roberto describes the significance of being the pregonero at the Carnival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, noting it was particularly meaningful during a difficult phase in his life. “When they invited me in June to be the pregonero, I was unsure at first. But as the event approached, I started to embrace it. It was a massive responsibility, and I relied on colleagues like Israel Reyes for guidance.”
He adds that the positive feedback and large turnout filled him with joy, as he aimed to pay tribute to significant figures in the Carnival.
Evolution Over Time
When asked if he’s changed since starting his career in Maspalomas, Roberto acknowledges the impact of age. “You become more discerning; when you’re younger, you’re a bit reckless. Now I consider my words carefully, especially since the rise of social media. Any comment can be misunderstood and attract criticism.”
Collaborations and Connections
Roberto shares his good rapport with fellow performers, highlighting his special connection with Antonia San Juan. “I didn’t know her well as an actress prior, but working together was a wonderful experience,” he recalls.
Memorable Moments
Reflecting on countless drag and queen galas, Roberto recounts entertaining anecdotes, including one involving Rosy de Palma, who had to participate without rehearsal due to unexpected circumstances.
He laughs about instances when technical difficulties arose, recalling a moment where he had to clarify errors in the jury’s records to avoid confusion during a live event.
The Joy of Recognition
“What does it mean to be one of the most recognisable voices in our carnival? I don’t know if I qualify for that title, but I genuinely love what I do. During Carnival, I barely sleep at home; it’s exhilarating to be recognised and appreciated for my work.”
Roberto shares that he is content with the affection he receives from the public.
Looking Ahead
“If Carnival granted me a wish for 2027, I would love to present the Gala Drag again,” he affirms, expressing his passion for the role and his desire to continue contributing to the festivities.
As for the future of Carnival post-50th anniversary, he hopes for a renewed understanding of its importance as a catalyst for industry and joy within the community. Despite some negative sentiments, he believes in the vitality of the city and the significance of Carnival as an integral part of its identity.
“It’s a hallmark of our community, as is the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. When people label it the best carnival in the world, there must be a reason.”
