Canary Islands Airports Handle 4.1 Million Passengers in May

May Passenger Figures for Canary Islands Airports

In May, the airports in the Canary Islands recorded a total of 4,109,171 passengers, with no change from the figure recorded in May 2025. Of the total number of travellers, 4,091,752 were on commercial flights. Among them, 1,938,069 travelled on domestic flights, which is a 0.5% increase compared to the same month last year, while 2,153,683 flew on international routes, marking a 0.6% decrease.

Top Airports by Passenger Numbers

Gran Canaria Airport registered the highest number of passengers with 1,175,039, reflecting a 1.5% increase compared to May 2025. The other airports are as follows:
– Tenerife South: 938,372 passengers (-4.8%)
– César Manrique-Lanzarote: 682,989 passengers (-0.8%)
– Tenerife North-Ciudad de La Laguna: 636,405 passengers (+3.9%)
– Fuerteventura: 504,264 passengers (-1.3%)
– La Palma: 133,687 passengers (+13.9%)
– El Hierro: 27,718 passengers (+11.7%)
– La Gomera: 10,697 passengers (-5.7%)

Additionally, there were 38,970 aircraft movements and 2,503 tonnes of cargo transported.

Year-to-Date Summary

In the first five months of the year, the Canary Islands airports recorded 22,694,672 passengers, a decrease of 0.6% compared to the same period in 2025. Out of 22,599,593 commercial travellers, 8,650,681 used domestic flights (-0.7%), and 13,948,912 opted for international flights, a 0.4% decline compared to the previous year.

Between January and May, 202,182 aircraft movements were managed, with 12,986 tonnes of cargo transported.

Aena Group Performance

The Aena Group airports, consisting of 46 airports and two heliports in Spain, London Luton Airport, and 17 airports in Brazil, closed May 2026 with 36,116,528 passengers, a 4.7% increase compared to the same month in 2025. They managed 309,102 aircraft movements, a 4% rise, and transported 130,958 tonnes of cargo, representing a 3.2% increase since last year.

Accumulative Data Until May

Up to May 2026, Aena Group airports have welcomed 150,874,452 passengers, a growth of 4% over 2025. There were 1,303,821 aircraft movements, marking an increase of 2.9%, and 620,182 tonnes of goods were transported, a rise of 4.5%.

Traffic from January to May is experiencing an increase in flight schedules during the early months of the summer season, following the start of the Middle East conflict, along with a transfer of passengers from rail services earlier in the year (after the train accident on January 18). These are seen as two isolated circumstances and therefore do not represent a structural change in traffic patterns.

Aena Network in Spain

From January to May 2026, the Aena airports in Spain reported 124,606,562 passengers, a 3.7% increase compared to 2025. This growth is lower than that recorded in the first five months of the previous year compared to 2024, which saw a 4.7% increase. The airports operated 1,066,623 flights (+3.6%) and transported 556,852 tonnes of cargo, an increase of 5.1% over the same period in 2025.

In May, Aena airports in Spain recorded 30,690,644 passengers, a rise of 5% compared to May 2025. Furthermore, they managed 259,412 aircraft movements, up 4.9%, and transported 118,042 tonnes of cargo, a 3.9% increase from the previous May.
