Madrid/Santa Cruz de Tenerife 19 Mar. (Europa Press) –
Borrasca Martinho is set to alert over half of Spain on Thursday, with areas in Asturias, Cantabria, and Galicia reaching orange warning levels, as reported by the State Meteorology Agency (AEMET). La Palma will be under yellow alert due to winds and coastal phenomena affecting both the eastern and western sides of the island later in the afternoon.
Thus, winds will come from the west at a moderate speed, with periods of strong gusts likely, particularly in the higher regions of the south and El Paso area during the early morning. There is also the possibility of very strong gusts on the eastern slopes, linked to the downslope winds; by the afternoon, the winds will shift to northeast.
Rest of the Country
Specifically, the Cordillera and Picos de Europa (Principality of Asturias) and the Liébana (Cantabria) will be under an orange wind warning, while A Coruña and Pontevedra (Galicia) will face warnings due to waves.
Additional wind warnings will be issued in La Palma (Canary Islands); Ribera del Ebro de la Rioja (La Rioja); Álava, Guipúzcoa, and Vizcaya (Basque Country); the Cantabrian region of Navarra, central Navarra, Navarro Pyrenees, and Ribera del Ebro de Navarra (Community Foral of Navarra); Sierra de Madrid (Community of Madrid); A Coruña, Lugo, Ourense, and Pontevedra (Galicia); Lleida (Catalonia); Cuenca and Guadalajara (Castilla-La Mancha); Ávila, Burgos, León, Palencia, Salamanca, Segovia, Valladolid, and Zamora (Castilla y León); Centro and Valle de Villaverde and Cantabria del Ebro (Cantabria); Mallorca (Balearic Islands); southwestern Asturias (Principality of Asturias); Huesca and Zaragoza (Aragon); and Huelva and Jaén (Andalusia).
Furthermore, additional wave warnings will be issued for Almería, Cádiz, Granada, Huelva, and Málaga (Andalusia); and La Palma (Canary Islands). Additionally, rain warnings will be in effect for Cáceres (Extremadura); Ávila, Salamanca, and Zamora (Castilla y León); as well as Cádiz, Córdoba, Huelva, and Seville (Andalusia). On another note, Cádiz and Huelva (Andalusia) will face storm warnings; and Ávila, Salamanca, and Segovia (Castilla y León) will be on alert for thawing.
AEMET anticipates a day characterised by instability across the Peninsula due to the passage of a front linked to Borrasca Martinho. Consequently, very clouded skies will dominate, with rainfall progressing from west to east, although the likelihood of rain will decrease in the Cantabrian area. There is minimal chance that the front will reach the eastern part of the Peninsula, where the influx of Mediterranean moisture may result in light rainfall.
Regionally, the national agency notes that rain will be more plentiful in the western areas of the central system, the Cantabrian mountain range, and the Andalusian mountains. Here, showers that may turn heavy and be accompanied by storms can also occur along coastal regions. Additionally, possible snowfall is expected in the central system, the Cantabrian Mountains, and the Sierra Nevada at elevations above 2000 meters, which may lower to 1600/1800 meters. Regarding the archipelagos, the Balearic Islands will see no rainfall, just cloudy skies that may transition to high cloud intervals. Meanwhile, in the Canary Islands, the incoming front will bring light rainfall to the more elevated islands, especially La Palma.
The forecast indicates that maximum temperatures will rise in the Balearic Islands and the southeast and northeast of the Peninsula, with significant increases expected in the Pyrenees. Conversely, a decrease in temperatures is anticipated in the western third of the Peninsula, notably in the southwest. Minimum temperatures, however, will generally rise, with local increases possible in the southwestern interior of the Peninsula. Only weak frosts are expected in the high regions of the Pyrenees on this day.
AEMET concludes that moderate winds will be prevalent from the south and east across the Peninsula and Balearic Islands, with strong gusts in much of the northwest, the Cantabrian region, high and medium areas around the Ebro, Pyrenees, eastern half of the southern plateau, western extremities, and elevated regions of eastern Andalusia, Alborán, and sections of Mallorca. In particular, there may be hurricane-force gusts at the peaks of the Cantabrian Mountains. Very strong gusts could occur across other areas in Andalusia and the southern plateau. In the Canary Islands, moderate winds will blow from the northwest.
