Santa Cruz de Tenerife 11 Feb. (Europa Press) –
The Vice President of the Government of the Canary Islands and leader of the Canarian PP, Manuel Domínguez, stated on Tuesday that he will be “forceful where required” to protect the overarching interests of the islands amidst the discussion regarding the distribution of unaccompanied migrant minors, a stance not endorsed by his national party.
In response to an inquiry from the socialist group during the Plenary control session of Parliament, he asserted that he will advocate for his position “objectively” and without the “blinkers” that the socialists wear to overlook the “advancements” being made in the archipelago.
“I am here for one reason, and that is to defend the interests of this land, our people, the Canaries and the Canary Islands,” he clarified, emphasising that he is neither “brave” nor seeking a role in a “Ministry”, unlike Ángel Víctor Torres during the previous legislative term when he was president of the Canary Islands and acted as Pedro Sánchez’s “yes-man”.
The head of the Socialist Group, Nira Fierro, has labelled the Canarian government as a “showcase” because it “talks more than it acts”; it appears to care but fails to resolve anything at all.
She even remarked ironically that it resembles the “meme” of ‘Aliexpress’, “which claims to deliver what you ask for but often fails, as what is promised is not what is delivered – a genuine meme like that.”
She pointed out that the president, Fernando Clavijo, seems “complacent” and the vice president is “absent”, while the emergencies in the public hospitals of the Canary Islands are “overwhelmed”. Instead, they are “padding the usual accounts”, and still have not implemented the planned public positions in education for children aged 0 to 3 years or “revised” the dual vocational training.
She also condemned the fact that while they are approving more private universities, they are “suffocating the public sector”. She questioned, “Where is the Popular Party when needed?” stating that they have “abandoned” and “crushed” Dominguez.
“The issue is not that they abandon him, that leaves him in the background; it’s that when they do so, all the Canaries are affected, but Canarias is already aware that it cannot rely on the Popular Party,” she added, remarking that “bravery is demonstrated when people are accountable to the citizens, in the Congress of Deputies.”
“We do not seek bravery; we want agreements passed in the Congress of Deputies. Because if not, you will be proving that it is a meme,” she concluded.
