The Island Council of Tenerife announced yesterday its plans to enhance collaboration with the Santa Cruz Carnival by increasing sponsorship for the participating groups. The president and vice president of the island’s institution, Rosa Dávila and Lope Afonso, met with the mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, along with the vice president of Recinto Ferial, Manuel Fernández.
During the meeting, both administrations expressed their willingness to cooperate effectively for the upcoming edition of the Carnival. Rosa Dávila emphasised the significance of joint efforts between the authorities to ensure that the Tenerife Carnival remains a global symbol. “This meeting reaffirms the mutual interest of both administrations in continuing close collaboration to uphold the status of the Tenerife Carnival as one of our premier international ambassadors,” she stated.
The president of the island highlighted the value of the Carnival, which has been recognised as a Festival of International Tourist Interest, not only for its cultural importance but also for its economic benefits. “The Carnival generates over 38 million Euros and is a pivotal event not only for the Canary Islands but also as a global tourist magnet,” she underlined.
On his part, Lope Afonso mentioned that “the Cabildo aims, through Tenerife Tourism, to increase sponsorship for Carnival groups in the upcoming edition, considering the significant impact of the celebration on the entire Island’s economy.” He indicated that “as a tourist attraction, the Carnival can have improved avenues for promotion, precise targeting for its audience, as well as assisting Santa Cruz in enhancing elements that, in turn, aid in the enhancement of certain services featured in the Carnival programme.” Afonso pointed out that “at Tenerife Tourism, we regard Carnival as an emblem that aids in promoting the Island at major fairs.”
The Mayor of Santa Cruz expressed gratitude to the Council for “its dedication and backing of the city’s Carnival, which undoubtedly plays a crucial role in promoting the Island itself,” acknowledging that “we highly appreciate the increased funding for organising the Chicharrero Carnival and the support that the island institution will offer to various groups, actions that contribute towards the enrichment of this unique festival and its tourist attraction.”
