In the course of history, many formerly thriving towns have found themselves forsaken. One of the most famous examples is the city of Pripyat in Ukraine, a settlement established to accommodate the workers of the Chernobyl power plant, which had to be evacuated following the plant’s reactor explosion. Closer to home, the remnants of Belchite serve as a stark reminder of the Spanish Civil War, a town left in ruins and abandoned after being assaulted by Republican forces.
