An extensive refurbishment of the roadway, seating areas for relaxation, new urban infrastructure, sea erosion-resistant railings for enhanced views, and cutting-edge lighting are the recent enhancements made to Tegueste Street, located in the Punta Brava district of El Puerto.
These upgrades, part of the Puerto de la Cruz Tourism Infrastructure Rehabilitation Plan, have successfully turned this coastal area, previously deteriorated, into “an accessible area and a delightful promenade,” as highlighted by the Sustainable City and Citizen Participation Councillor and representative of the City Council in the Consortium, David Hernández.
The renovation covered the entire nearly 300-metre-long street, stretching from the square adjacent to Pelinor Street to the stairway leading up to the chapel, near the TF-316 road.
Within this stretch, planters featuring indigenous plants from the northern coast of the island are now present, irrigated by seawater. Additionally, state-of-the-art lighting ensuring both safety and compliance with the specific regulations of the Canary Islands Sky Law has been installed.
The project commenced last year, dating back to the 2015-2019 period.
“Despite the initial resistance back then, upon assuming office, a community engagement process was launched with the street residents to listen to their concerns and suggestions. Simultaneously, the project designer explained the benefits of the project and the rationale for the materials chosen,” Hernández explains.
The councillor acknowledges the project’s complexities, particularly during the initial phase close to the chapel, where uncertainties about the subsoil’s condition and challenges with sanitation and pipes emerged.
Nevertheless, he asserts that the effort paid off, evidenced by the final outcome, and “in general, residents are content as it has now become a scenic street, enhancing the value of their homes.”
