One of the most famous and frequently photographed ruined structures in Tenerife, known as ‘The Skeleton of Rojas’, is on the brink of demolition. The Tenerife Council has announced its plans to demolish the building located on the coast of Acentejo before the current term ends.
The council has committed to expediting the drafting, processing, and final approval of the ‘Special Plan for the Protection of the Costa de Acentejo Protected Landscape’, which may include an administrative collaboration agreement in favour of the demolition of ‘The Skeleton of Rojas’.
The coastal area of La Matanza houses two significant structures, one of which is well-established while the other, the aforementioned ‘The Skeleton of Rojas’, is still in its structural phase. Both buildings, situated precariously on the cliff edge, were originally part of the Puntillo del Sol Special Plan officially approved in September 1972. They now fall under the Costa de Acentejo Special Protection Plan, according to a report by the Cabildo.
These skeletal buildings, also known as El Esqueleto de Rojas, consist of two blocks interconnected by a central core built in the 1970s, initially planned for hotel purposes and standing at 15 floors high. The structure occupies a plot measuring approximately 183,000 square meters.
The Cabildo is presently in the process of drafting the Special Plan for the Protection of the Costa de Acentejo Protected Landscape. The initial phase and response to feedback are complete. Additionally, administrative procedures are underway for the subsequent phases leading to the initial and final approval of the plan.
Upon completion of the document outlining objectives, criteria summarizing public engagement processes, responses to feedback in the progress report, and a proposal for alternative selections, they will be presented to the Council’s Plenary Session for agreement.
