Empty industrial premises crumble in La Laguna

The framework of an industrial establishment situated in the San Matías district of La Laguna (Tenerife) collapsed on Tuesday, prompting people in nearby buildings to evacuate. Witnesses claim that no one was present inside at the time of the incident.

In a statement, the La Laguna City Council indicated that various municipal authorities, including the Local Police, Municipal Planning Department, Tenerife Fire Consortium, and a unit from the Canary Islands Emergency Service, were involved as a precautionary measure.

Adolfo Cordobés, the councilor for Territorial Planning in La Laguna, stated that a perimeter has been cordoned off to ensure people’s safety. He mentioned that witnesses confirmed no one was inside during the incident and steps are being taken to verify this.

Cordobés explained that the Civil Protection team, along with rescue dogs, joined the operation to ensure no one was harmed in the collapse.

“Owners and neighbors of nearby houses have voluntarily evacuated and have declined alternative accommodation offered by the City Council,” Cordobés confirmed.

Urban Planning officials have inspected the site, and damaged power lines are being replaced.

The City Council will investigate the cause of the collapse to prevent any structural impact on neighbouring buildings.

The debris will be cleared, and the building’s stability ensured, as per the statement.
