SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 5th February (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Minister of Public Works, Transport and Housing of the Government of the Canary Islands, Pablo Rodríguez, announced on Monday that the Executive will pass an urgent decree-law this month to accelerate the construction of public housing.
During a press conference to disclose the agreements of the Government Council, he stated that the aim is to finalize ongoing projects – some investment funds have up to 1,400 properties -, construct public housing, and streamline the transfer of land by the local authorities.
He stressed the need to “reduce the time” as the construction of a housing development usually takes up to three years, and the transfer of land from municipalities another twelve months.
Moreover, to make the construction of affordable housing more appealing to private developers, the ‘Canary Basic Module’ will be revised. It has remained unchanged since 2003 and will now increase from approximately 1,400 square meters to about 1,800, with variations for the peripheral islands and also according to the type of property.
The councillor pointed out that the Canarian Housing Plan includes the construction of around 2,000 houses on the islands, a figure deemed “inadequate” given that there are approximately 25,000 applicants.
The Government spokesperson, Alfonso Cabello, emphasized that with this decree, along with the regulation of holiday rentals already in progress by the Ministry of Tourism, and with over 5,000 objections to the draft, one of the major issues of the islands will be addressed.
