A heated debate is stirring in the Carnival community. The Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife will feature a Drag Gala this year. This comes after several unofficial attempts to host a show dedicated to this genre and after the City Council has repeatedly stated that they would not replicate the flagship contest of the Carnival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Set to take place on Piñata Friday, February 16, at Plaza de La Candelaria. The Council emphasizes that this new event aims to sustain the Drag community and culture in the Canary Islands.
Whether by chance or not, the scheduled date for the Tenerife gala aligns with the celebration of the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Carnival Drag Gala 2024, now in its 26th edition. It was held only once in 2021 due to the pandemic. The success of the event, born in 1998, has elevated the Las Palmas Carnival of Gran Canariato the extent that this year, for the first time, it has been designated as a International Tourism Interest Festival. Until the Drag Gala, Tenerife Carnival was often the focal point when discussing the Canary Islands Carnival outside the Islands. Now they are on par.
“Furthermore, it provides an opportunity for citizens, whether involved in drag shows professionally or not, to engage in an impactful event.”
The artist and presenter Exuberancia Carey will be hosting the Dragnaval Gala.
