Mari Brito will not resign as mayor of Candelaria after an oral trial was opened by a court in Güímar, as DIARIO DE AVISOS announced in its Saturday edition.
In an interview granted yesterday to Cadena Ser, he was forceful in response to the request made by the Sí se puede and Izquierda Unida Canaria parties, appearing in the case as a private accusation, due to the imminent opening of the oral trial for the discharges in the Polígono Industrial of Güímar, in which the former mayors Gumersindo García (Candelaria), Luisa Castro (Güímar) and José Juan Lemes (Arafo) are also involved, who ruled the three municipalities in 2013 when they received the Polígono. On the other hand, Mari Brito took over as Mayor in 2015. The complainants highlight “his inaction and the negative impact of these discharges on the environment and the health of citizens.”

Brito stated that “he is not” going to resign and that he has “a very clear conscience.” He assured that “since I became aware of the existing problems, I acted and worked intensely. Today, the problem is solved.” However, he showed “respect” for the judicial order despite not sharing it and will exercise his right to defense. He also expressed confidence that “everything is progressing well.” The mayor defended her management by explaining that “the only thing I have done is work” and recalled how she even declared the closure of the Polygon, although “later it was not effective, because precisely a court said no, that it had to be kept open.”

In relation to the judicial process initiated, in autumn 2022 an Industrial Wastewater Station (Edari) was put into operation in the Industrial Estate and the regional treatment plant (Edaru) is already finished in the absence of water from the sanitation network arriving. of the three municipalities of the Valley.

Nira Fierro, Secretary of Organization of the regional PSOE, stated on Mírame TV that “Mari Brito has the full support of the party,” because “since 2015 when she has been mayor the only thing she has done is put order and solutions on the table to solve the problems.” waste”.
