In the latest data published by the Canarian Employment Observatory (Obecan) for May, Santa Úrsula emerges as the municipality with the most promising figures in terms of unemployment over the past five years. The number of jobless individuals has decreased by 5.7% compared to the same period in 2023.
Additionally, as highlighted by the local government (AISU), unemployment rates have seen a decline across all educational backgrounds among job seekers. Individuals with primary education witnessed a significant 7.4% drop in unemployment. Those with secondary education experienced a more modest reduction of 1.6%, whereas individuals holding university degrees or degrees in Vocational Training recorded decreases of 11.4% and 9.9% respectively. “This ensures equal job opportunities for all segments of the population,” stressed the town’s mayor, Juan Acosta.
On the other hand, Marina Lorenzo, the Councilor for Employment and Local Development, pointed out that the city council has been actively involved in social and labour integration projects over the past few years. They have introduced training programmes in conjunction with employment opportunities and other initiatives aimed at enhancing the employability of various groups, particularly those facing challenges in entering the job market.
Furthermore, a consistent downward trend in female unemployment has been observed for the fifth consecutive month, with a notable 8.6% decrease compared to the previous year. Long-term unemployment has also registered a decline of 4.96% when compared to the previous year.
