The girl becomes independent

2024 will go down in history Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival like the year in which the girl tells her father, City Hall, that she is becoming independent.

Beyond the five centuries of history that support the festival that was born in the street and that was sponsored by the chicharrera societies since 1850, the organization has fitted the Carnival into its municipal structure since 1961, when it was celebrated with the mask of the Fiestas de Winter.

In that transition, not only policy Without also being social, the Joint Carnival Commission emerged, a table around which public managers and representatives of the groups met to make decisions.

The girl grew up and in the mid-eighties the Department of Festivals found accommodation with the Autonomous Organization of Festivals and Recreational Activities. Almost what is spent today to hire two troupes -30,000 euros- was invested in the sixties in a celebration that today exceeds five and a half million euros; That is what this Festival of International Tourist Interest has cost the Santa Cruz City Council since 1980.

The naivety typical of childhood has become a structure that demands more agility in management, especially to comply with the new contracting requirements where the specifications accumulate to guarantee the provision of services – from the stage, with all the equipment that entails, to orchestras or groups-. Added to this is that the date of celebration of the Santa Cruz Carnival Tenerife It is marked, faithful to tradition, by the Holy Week calendar, in a grotesque and rapid explanation, which forces us to look for new mechanisms to provide an agile response to prevent, like this year, the set from being built in ten days. and out of time, as has already happened in previous editions. The same with the repeated budget modifications. The solution is dated. Starting in July, the conversion of the autonomous body into a public business entity is planned. The girl becomes independent from us.
