The Minister of Education of the Government of the Canary Islands, Poli Suárez, stated this Wednesday that he does not have a report that supports the complaint made by CEO Bethencourt y Molina to the Deputy of the Common in which he warns of the increase in “serious” health problems. mental among young people after the pandemic, “even among primary school children.”
The Deputy of the Common, Rafael Yanes, met with members of the educational community of CEO Bethencourt y Molina of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, who have requested specific resources to address the psychological needs of the students given that the mental health situation is a “ social emergency.”
The director of the center, María José Zamorín, explains that the increase in minors suffering from mental health problems after the pandemic is “alarming, with Primary classes in which all students suffer from psychological problems.”
Poli Suarez, in statements to Efe, has stated that it is “flatly uncertain” that there are entire primary school groups on the islands with mental health problems, since this “is not supported by any report or study.”
The counselor has assured that “there is no social emergency in the Canary Islands regarding mental health in the students”, at the same time that he has asked the director of the center located in Santa Cruz de Tenerife to transfer all the information to the Ministry in order to take a decision.
In this sense, he has criticized that it is “irresponsible” for the CEO’s director to make these public statements “without report or rigor” and that she has skipped all the Ministry’s protocols by going to the Common Deputy before the inspection or the own Counseling.
“It seems risky to us to assure without data that its condition is worse than other regions or before the pandemic,” said the counselor, who insisted that the ministries of Education and Health work together in this regard.
