The Cabildo of Tenerife has drafted by consensus and based on collaborative work with the island’s town councils the first draft of the Protocol for the prevention of sexual harassment in nightlife venues.
The insular director of Equality, Patricia León, explained that the drafting of the aforementioned protocol began on February 13, 2023, when the Insular Table of Equality Policies was informed of the intention to form a technical group to prepare said Protocol jointly between local institutions with experience in the matter and with qualified technical personnel.
“This is a pioneering initiative that aims to provide even more tools to prevent and combat cases of sexual harassment,” León said. The town councils that took the initiative to give substance to this proposal were initially those of Puerto de la Cruz, Adeje and El Rosario.
Subsequently, the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council and the Organic Gender Violence Unit (IASS) joined the call. Once the process is completed, membership will be opened to the rest of the island’s municipalities, as well as companies in the sector that voluntarily wish to do so.
The draft is now in the process of review by the different participating town councils and will continue with three regional tables in which companies and business organizations in the sector convened by the Cabildo will participate, in collaboration with the town councils with the aim of giving participation to the business community to make contributions to the Protocol.
In this last phase, the final Protocol will be drafted and approved by the Island Government Council. Once approved, an information and communication campaign will begin for the voluntary adhesion of companies and city councils on the Island.
