SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 18 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The doctor and former president of the Board of Brotherhoods and Brotherhoods (JHC) of La Laguna, Pedro López, will be in charge of proclaiming Holy Week in La Laguna 2023 in an act that will be held on Thursday, March 23 in the parish of Santo Domingo de Guzman. Next Wednesday the official poster of this celebration and the program of events for Lent will be announced.
“The City Council of La Laguna collaborates with the JHC in the organization of events that, in addition to their religious dimension, have an important cultural, artistic, patrimonial and historical component”, as stated by the mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez , who applauded the choice of Pedro López as town crier “because of his extensive knowledge and experiences.”
The mayor recalled that the City Council and the Board of Brotherhoods have the common objective of working together to magnify Holy Week and position it for tourism at the national level, with actions such as the file for its declaration as an Asset of Tourist Interest or the promotion carried out in the Plaza de Callao, in the center of Madrid, in the month of January.
For his part, the president of the Board of Brotherhoods and Brotherhoods, Juan Antonio Pérez Gómez, pointed out that it is a joy that the bishop has appointed Dr. Pedro López as preacher of Holy Week, because “he is a person who has shown his skills, first as a brother, then as secretary of the JHC and finally as president, where he was in charge of it for six years”.
“In short,” Juan Antonio Pérez pointed out, “he is a person who lives the traditions of our city very intensely and we have verified it both in the years that he was in charge of the institution and after his departure, since he has continued to be concerned about everything that has to do with our Holy Week and all the festivities that are celebrated in the city that has seen it grow”.
Pedro Arturo López Cabrera was born in Tenerife in 1977. After graduating in Biology in 1999 from the University of La Laguna, he moved to the Italian town of Perugia to study Medicine. After three years, he decided to return to La Laguna, where he finished his degree in 2007, entering as a resident doctor at the Nuestra Señora de Candelaria University Hospital to train as a family doctor. Already in 2013 he joined said hospital as a doctor in the Emergency Department. Gradually, his studies are complemented by various courses, experts and a master’s degree in Emergencies and Hospital Management. Currently, he continues to work as a Hospital Emergency doctor at the aforementioned center, of which he is the deputy medical director.
If medicine is the great vocation of Pedro López, his passion is the world of the brotherhood, in particular the Brotherhood of Mercy, which, founded on July 1, 1952, is one of the oldest in La Laguna. In 2008 he was part of the Board of Brotherhoods and Brotherhoods of La Laguna, for four years as secretary, becoming its president until 2018, after being granted an extension to extend the maximum term -two two-year terms. each one-, due to the lack of interested parties in taking charge of that body. In the end he remained in office for six years.
Due to his deep knowledge and intense work in the world of the brotherhood, he has been invited to give numerous talks and proclamations. He has been a preacher of Holy Week in the neighborhood of La Cuesta de Arguijón (2017) and of the festivities in honor of Our Lady the Virgin of Lourdes de La Verdellada (2022). Equally outstanding is his fondness for nativity scenes, of which he has been a great promoter in La Laguna, developing numerous projects over the years, most within the JHC; the last of them was the Bethlehem of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, last Christmas.
