Tenerife Tourism and Tenerife Convention Bureau (TCB), together with a dozen Tenerife companies in the sector, have attended the IBTM in Barcelona for another year, considered among the most important business fairs in the world. An event in which the technicians of the TCB brand, intended to show abroad the qualities of Tenerife as a MICE destination (meetings, incentives, conventions and events), held more than 25 professional meetings.
The vice president of the Cabildo and Minister of Tourism, Lope Afonso, has pointed out that Tenerife “is a destination with experience in receiving visitors related to the organization of congresses and all types of events, which is why we start from the conviction that the MICE segment represents an important market niche for the Island, providing a customer profile with spending capacity and who can associate days of vacation stay with their professional trip.”
“We have important elements in our offer that position us as a very competitive destination in the segment, which is why we attend the most relevant international fairs, such as the IBTM in Barcelona, with the ambition of continuing to conquer new opportunities from the most important players. important in the sector,” added Lope Afonso.
For her part, the CEO of Tenerife Tourism, Dimple Melwani, explained that the Island “has modern conference centers with capacity for up to 4,000 people and a wide accommodation network, especially 4 and 5 stars, with the capacity to host conferences and various business, regional, national and international events; in addition to excellent air connectivity that connects us with 145 airports in 29 markets, as well as an average annual temperature of 22 degrees that makes our destination even more attractive for the MICE segment. Everything “This makes us a very competitive destination in the MICE sector.”
Furthermore, Melwani added, “this is an industry that goes beyond the tourism field and activates multiple productive sectors, not only hotels, travel agencies, airlines or conference centers, but all types of hostess, catering, stand assembly services. , transportation, taxis, guides, simultaneous translation or audiovisuals”.
IBTM is the acronym for Incentives, Business Travel and Meetings and brought together some 15,000 professionals from this sector, among whom were event planners (meeting planners), agencies specialized in conferences and companies that regularly hold work meetings or incentive trips for your employees.
Tenerife Convention Bureau participated in the IBTM accompanied by nine companies associated with the brand, including hotels, travel agencies specialized in events and congress services companies. In addition to the 25 meetings with conference organizers accredited for the fair, TCB technicians made half a dozen presentations to various groups of professionals who visit the fair, from hotel chains or specialized magazines to agencies. They also attended the various presentations made by Promotur-Turismo de Canarias.
MICE SEGMENT
The MICE sector complements the Island’s vacation offer and contributes to its deseasonalization. It is also a segment that positions Tenerife as a focus for the transmission of knowledge beyond the traditional only vacation offer, which influences the employability of local talent, and which usually attracts a type of visitor with a socioeconomic profile. medium and medium high. Thus, it is estimated that the spending at the destination of a MICE client is between three and five times higher than that of a vacation client if the costs of renting meeting rooms, coffee breaks, lunches, audiovisuals, social programs, etc. are taken into account.
In Tenerife, the promotion of the Island as a congress destination is carried out through the Tenerife Convention Bureau (TCB), a Tenerife Tourism department that also brings together 60 local associated companies (congress centers, travel agencies, unique spaces , service companies).
The TCB attends specialized fairs, organizes visits to professional conference organizers in countries such as Spain, Germany, France or the United States, and also provides free advice to all those professionals from Tenerife who face the challenge of bringing events to the Island.
