The lack of shadow spaces in the schools and institutes of Arona has generated a disagreement between the municipal government (PP, CC MxA) and the main opposition party (PSOE) after the local Executive’s refusal to support an institutional motion in the next Plenary Session presented by the group socialist in which he urged the Government of the Canary Islands to “carry out strategic planning” to provide more shaded areas for educational centers of the municipality that “helps reduce solar radiation and lower temperatures, improving climatic comfort in the warm months without hindering the use of the sun during the colder months.”
In the socialist motion, signed by José Julián Mena, it is recalled that the recent heat wave that affected the Archipelago in the first half of October forced the Government of the Canary Islands to suspend classes due to the risk of high temperatures (in the South They reached 39 degrees for several days) for teachers and students. “It is one more example that we have to act in the face of climate change,” is highlighted in the socialist group’s motion.
The mayor of Arona, Fátima Lemes, explained that the rejection of the socialist proposal is due to the fact that “it makes no sense to carry out an institutional motion on an issue that we have been working on since minute one with the Ministry of Education.” The councilor told this newspaper that the centers have been visited to confirm the needs in terms of educational infrastructure, “something that has not been done in recent years,” and stressed that her municipal government agrees that more shades are needed. in educational centers and “in other areas”, but asks the opposition to “work hand in hand” to solve the problem.
“Our position is not to urge the Government of the Canary Islands to make a plan or study on the needs of the centers, because we know those needs well. We are already transferring to the Ministry of Education the demands that schools and institutes have transmitted to us,” stressed the Aronera mayor, an action that will allow us to be “more effective,” in the words of the Councilor for Education, Héctor Reyes.
The socialist group highlights in the motion its “sensitivity” to environmental issues and recalls that in the electoral program it proposed the creation of a “shadow plan” for educational centers in Arona, as a “priority demand” to transfer to the Ministry of Education.
