SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Oct. 17 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The municipal groups of the Canarian Coalition and the Popular Party in the La Laguna City Council have requested an extraordinary plenary session to debate an urgent motion in which, among other things, they request the closure of the migrant macro centers of Las Raíces and Las Canteras.
In the joint motion, both political groups ask, as a single point, to “reiterate, ratify and demand compliance with the agreements adopted in the extraordinary plenary session of February 24, 2021.”
These agreements, they emphasize in a note, “included 21 points, starting with the reiteration of the municipality’s rejection of the reception model based on macrocenters.”
Thus, “the commitment of La Laguna as an open and welcoming municipality” was vindicated and the State Government was urged to increase the allocations for caring for migrants.
He also advocated improving coordination between the administrations involved and requested to avoid the installation of foreign detention centers in the Canary Islands and La Laguna.
Likewise, it included the rejection of the Canary Islands “becoming an open-air prison”, urging the urgent referral of migrants to centers in the Peninsula and the rest of Europe, while requesting “the immediate closure of the facilities.” reception of migrants in the Las Raíces and Las Canteras camps”.
Both groups indicate that this motion was presented and approved three years ago, at which time the state government stated that the Las Raíces and Las Canteras facilities “were a social, conjunctural and temporary emergency plan.”
However, they indicate that the majority of state commitments have not materialized, as stated in the motion, and “this erroneous model of macro centers” with “overcrowding” continues, far from complying with human rights legislation.
Along the same lines, it is recalled that among the agreements it was determined to create a table to monitor the migratory situation, with the presence of various organizations, institutions, neighborhood representatives, camp managers and political formations present in the Plenary, to manage what was happening.
In this context, they indicate that it is considered “essential” to reactivate this table to avoid the spread of incorrect or false information.
