The Island has 14 more psychogeriatric places, the first resource of this type in the North. The insular Area of Social Action activated this specialized service for seniors with mental or behavioral disorders in Tierra de Oro, in Los Realejos, through an agreement with the Association to Help People Dependent on Canary Islands. With a cost of 772,018 euros, The financing comes from the cooperation agreement between the Government of the Canary Islands and the Cabildo for the care of people in a situation of dependency.
The need for a Psychogeriatric Unit is justified “by the increase in life expectancy and the development of dementia and other neurodegenerative disorders associated with aging.” The Minister of Social Action, Águeda Fumero, explains that with These places decentralize a service that is now only provided in the Metropolitan area.
Águeda Fumero points out that “with this new resource, we confirm the commitment of this island Government to minimize the dramatic waiting list that Tenerife has in the field of socio-health resources. In this framework, the counselor also advances that the Cabildo of Tenerife “is working on developing a Comprehensive Care Program for the Elderly from a global perspective, placing special emphasis on those issues that affect the vulnerability of that segment of the population.”
During the celebration of Seniors’ Day, Fumero Roque maintains that “this program will contain aspects related to leisure, the promotion of active aging, as well as initiatives that ensure that seniors receive the care they require based on their circumstances.” .
The Social Action area of the Tenerife Cabildo conveys, through its person in charge, that “our concern is in provide effective solutions to the needs of the elderly as a very vulnerable social group, keeping in mind that our society is characterized by having an increasingly aging population.
Águeda Fumero also emphasizes that “the work we propose for this mandate has as a fundamental tool the provision of all necessary resources.” Likewise, among the intentions of the island Government is “coordinated work between the Cabildo and the town councils of the Island, because our objective is to work hand in hand with the administrations that are closest to the citizens to prioritize services, channeling demands and needs of the elderly through the town councils, under the protection of the Cabildo as an insular administration.
