The security commission made up of representatives of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Civil Guard, National Police, COAG, UPA, Asaga and the Association of Avocado Producers has agreed to promote an awareness campaign so that avocados are not bought that are not in official channels of distribution, where the traceability of the product is not guaranteed, as a measure that serves to regulate the price and quality of the product.
The Minister of the Primary Sector, Valentín González, summoned the members of the commission with the aim of establishing criteria to promote a line of actions aimed at protecting farms located in Tenerife, since “in addition to the problems that farmers must face , crop thefts, especially avocados, have been added in recent years.
In recent years, avocado cultivation has increased significantly in Tenerife, where more than 1,100 hectares are dedicated and it is the one that has grown the most in the Canary Islands in the last five years, specifically more than 100%.
In addition, much of the fruit grown is sold in the local market, the Cabildo reports in a note.
The meeting was held at the request of avocado producers and agricultural professional associations, who were “concerned” by the increase in thefts in avocado farms, after forcing the fencing of farms, insist the corporation.
