The beaches of El Médano reopened to the bathroom as the levels of E.coli in the water drop

The Granadilla de Abona City Council has proceeded this Saturday to reopen the central beaches, Leocadio Machado and Playa Chica once the results of the counter-analysis carried out confirm the quality of the water as the E.coli bacterium rates are below the allowed values.

Further

In a statement, the municipal council recalls that only the central beach exceeded the levels allowed for bathing, but as a precaution the security perimeter was extended from Playa Chica to Leocadio Machado, temporarily prohibiting bathing and raising the red flag.

A measure that, he argues, was taken to guarantee the safety of bathers, pending the results of the samples taken yesterday, Friday, and that today have confirmed the good quality of the water.

On behalf of the local administration, a study of the real state of the network in the central beach area was requested yesterday Friday from the Entemanser company, which was awarded the maintenance service for the sanitation network.

That, apart from requesting an urgent meeting with the Tenerife Island Water Council for the purpose of finding out the status of the works of the Granadilla treatment plant, a system that will fully purify the wastewater of San Isidro and the entire coast of the municipality.

The neighbors, fed up

This year, the balconies of the town were dressed with posters in protest. The main demand of the residents is to put an end to the discharge of polluted water into the sea. “Welcome to El Miérdano”, “No more poop in the sea”, “For an efficient treatment plant” or “Danger! The people get sick from swimming in poop” are some of the phrases that can be read on the facades of the houses.

It is common for the island’s beaches to be closed due to the presence of the bacteria E.coli in the ocean. This microbe is found in the stomach of humans and reaches the ocean through sewage outfalls. These large pipes carry the supposedly purified water from the Wastewater Treatment Plants to the bottom of the sea. However, currents carry these flows up to the surface and towards the coast.
