The candidate of the Popular Party (PP), Fátima Lemes Reverón, will become the first mayor of Arona today, thanks to the support of the Canary Islands Coalition and More for Arona, a pact that was taken for granted since before May 28 and that ends with eight years in office of the PSOE, a party that won the elections with José Julián Mena as candidate, but without reaching an absolute majority. The fragile difference in votes between PP, CC and MxA will be noticeable, and a lot, in the distribution of areas, where the largest budget items will fall on nationalists and on the party formed by the ex-socialists who broke the absolute majority of the government chaired by Mena.
The next mayoress has expressed on her Facebook account her “desire, enthusiasm, seriousness and commitment” with a view to the stage that opens today. Although she has not given any clue about how the portfolios are going to be distributed, various sources from the parties anticipated yesterday who the areas of government would correspond to. These pools suggest that the key areas with the largest budget, such as Works, Environment and Public Services or Urban Planning, will be for Coalición Canaria y Más por Arona. This last political formation could also manage Tourism. It is taken for granted that the first and second tenure of Mayor will be for Clara Pérez (CC) and Dácil León (MxA). All bets point to the fact that in charge of Urban Planning will be the exedil of this same area in the previous stage, Luis García. Urbanism is essential in a municipality with strong tourist interests, and which in recent months has seen significant progress in the Mena stage, such as the unblocking of the partial plan for El Mojón, where investments are expected that could exceed 1,000 million euros, Ten-Bel or Guargacho.
Luis García was expelled from his government by Mena, who expressed doubts about his administration, which is facing two important tests. On the one hand, the case of a warehouse in Guaza and, on the other, the construction of the Arts shopping center. The first is under appeal before the Provincial Court after being provisionally archived. The second, under investigation by the Prosecutor’s Office, which has not yet ruled on those investigated.
