A regional pact between the Canary Islands Coalition and the Popular Party transferred to the municipalities of the South would put an end to the historical hegemony (for years overwhelming) of the Socialist Party in the local corporations of the south of Tenerife. Although the PSOE won the 28M in seven of the nine municipalities in the region, it runs the risk of governing only in those it obtained an absolute majority (Adeje, Fasnia and Vilaflor de Chasna), in case of prospering the alliances between nationalists and popular.
Yesterday, leaders of both parties recognized at the end of the first meeting of the negotiating commissions their predisposition to go hand in hand in the institutions that they can, as the spokesman for the PP delegation, Poli Suárez, stated: “The insular directions They are coordinated with the regional management and the will is to make agreements with CC where we add”.
If the two parties agreed to support the most voted list of both political formations -in some cases they would require the support of a third actor- CC and PP would share power in Arona, Granadilla de Abona (the two most populous municipalities in the South) and Isora Guide.
Applying this criterion, Ana Dorta (CC) would seize the presidency of the Guía de Isora City Council from Josefa Mesa after 28 years of resounding socialist victories and José Domingo Regalado (CC), although he would not reach an absolute majority, could retain the Mayor’s Office of Granadilla, ruling out a PSOE-Vox pact.
Another thing is that Jennifer Miranda (PSOE), who obtained a councilor more than CC, closes an unnatural agreement with the PP (possibility that has been tested before the elections), which could have consequences in a scenario of agreements cascading given the population, political and economic weight of Granadilla de Abona. The closeness of a dog-faced general election between socialists and populares does not seem to help an alliance between Jennifer Miranda and Marcos Antonio Rodríguez, but it would not be the first time that the Granada City Council would go against the current of the global trend.
A fourth municipality that will need agreements to govern is Arico, where the options are more open. Olivia Delgado (PSOE) touched the absolute majority, but she needs a mayor. CC added 3, Arico Somos Todos (AST) 2 and PP another two. Nationalists and popular do not add up, so everything indicates that governance goes through the two councilors of AST.
THREE CUSHIONS
If the CC-PP pact materializes and respecting the agreement to support the most voted list, Arona would have its first female mayor, Fátima Lemes (PP), who won Clara Pérez (CC) by a handful of votes (74). For this, it is necessary for the government alliance Más por Arona to join the government alliance, the force that emerged as a result of the breakup of the socialist group, led by Dácil León, who has already conveyed to both parties his desire for a three-way alliance, which that would leave the triumph of José Julián Mena (PSOE) on paper and condemn him to the opposition after eight years at the head of the City Council. Fátima Lemes has already acknowledged to this newspaper that she is “prepared to be the first mayoress of Arona” after her first contacts with Clara Pérez and Dácil León.
Despite the fact that the numbers smile at the CC and PP alliance, the PSOE seeks to minimize the impact on the southern municipalities and does not give up exploring ways that will allow it to govern in one of the four municipalities that are in the air. Although he admits that the board of a CC-PP regional agreement does not make it easy, the mathematics say that they are not that far away: they give him an agreement with CC or PP in Arona, with the PP in Granadilla de Abona and Guía de Isora , and with one of the three parties that achieved representation in Arico.
