The PP proposes a Socioeconomic Impulse Plan for the Isla Baja

The candidate of People’s Party to the presidency of Island Council of Tenerife, lope afonsoannounced this week during a visit to the municipality of The Silosalong with the PP candidate for mayor of Silense, Raquel Gonzalezthe proposal to launch from the future insular government «A Comprehensive Socioeconomic Promotion Plan for Isla Baja». This region is made up of the municipalities of Garachico, Los Silos, Buenavista del Norte and El Tanquewhere they reside more than 17,000 Tenerife residents.

The low island It has not stopped losing population in recent years. The worst part is taken The Silos, with 99 fewer neighbors since 2020; followed by The tankwith 39 less, and Buena Vista del Norte, with a drop of 33. This region is the only one that evolves in the opposite direction than the rest of the island and in 2022 it had less population than in 1960, before the tourism boom. Between 1994 and 2014, these localities of the northwest of Tenerife They have already lost 2,814 inhabitants. Only garachico It has managed to stop depopulation in recent years, but the rest of the towns on Isla Baja have continued to lose neighbors.

The objective of the popular ones is to make the Isla Baja “a more attractive place to live and invest”

The data of the historical evolution of the population of the municipalities of the Archipelago, elaborated by the Canarian Institute of Statistics (Istac) from the figures of the National Statistics Institute (INE)reflect that the lower island In 1960 it had a total of 18,137 inhabitants, and now they are just 17,130thousand residents less than 63 years ago.

lope afonso stressed that “the complicated orography of our Island means that there are areas, such as Isla Baja, which over the years have suffered isolation in relation to the rest of the territories of Tenerife». A situation that “has worsened significantly in recent times, mainly due to the poor state of road communications, which has an impact on the depopulation of the municipalities that make up this region, as well as a depressed socioeconomic situation.”

Afonso clarifies that the main objective of the People’s Party is to “launch a series of measures integrated into a specific action plan for this environment that contribute to improving mobility in the area and making this region a more attractive place to live and invest”.

The candidate for the insular Presidency claimed the importance of the Cabildo to promote policies that “guarantee equal opportunities for all Tenerife, wherever they live”. In his opinion, “the will of the PP project is to return to the Cabildo that leading role in the insular area, exercising its structuring function of the territory and social cohesion».
