The victim of the execution committed in the parking lot of the Official School of Languages, in La Verdellada, was experiencing financial problems in November 2017. According to the National Police, who was his friend and boss, the lawyer and businessman Evaristo González Reyes, planned Since then, he has ended Machín’s life and ordered the purchase of ten telephones, which he used to speak with the “target” and with the person who killed him.
Five years have passed since the businessman Carlos Machín Quintero was shot dead when, after leaving English classes, he had just gotten into his car in the parking lot of the La Laguna Official School of Languages, in La Verdellada. It was the night of a Tuesday, April 17. The first ad spoke of a shooting with a deceased. It was quarter past ten.
Shortly after it was learned that the victim had been linked to nightlife businesses in the university city. And they weren’t just any two places, but rather well-known ones: the Kapitel pub and the El Palco nightclub. Machín, a native of Isora, in The ironwas in charge of the establishments, but from several instances the real property was attributed to a key figure of the nightlife and the lagoon hospitality industry. The image of Machín lying face up on the asphalt, while the Scientific Police carried out the first visual inspection and sample collection, led us to executions typical of other societies, with much higher levels of crime than those of Canary Islands.
The reality is that, after five years, the trial for this case has not yet been held and there is not even a scheduled date for it. The alleged mastermind, lawyer and businessman Evaristo González Reyes; the alleged perpetrators, Ernesto Inocencio OH, who allegedly fired the shots, and the driver of the car used for the escape, JG and five other alleged implicates are today on provisional release awaiting the hearing.
According to the sources consulted, the Prosecutor’s Office still does not have the qualification document, which establishes its request for a sentence for each defendant. And, for now, no data is given on the reasons for the slowdown in the process. The investigation by the Homicide Group of the Provincial Brigade of the Judicial Police that allowed the alleged perpetrators and collaborators to be identified was disclosed four years ago after the arrests.
The key to the investigators’ work was the analysis of the calls before and after the event
Seven months later, in January 2020, the trial against Evaristo González began for a second separate piece of the Corredor case, in which he was accused of Social Security fraud, for not registering his workers, and forgery, for making false contracts and mendacious payrolls so that some people could access pensions and unemployment benefits, or could access to buy goods and services through banks, which nobody would pay for afterwards. Criminal Court number 9 sentenced González Reyes to 8 years in prison. But he appealed, and the Sixth Section of the Provincial Court reduced the sentence to two and a half years in prison.
In 2012, the Corredor case came to public opinion, in which the National Police carried out an operation in which Evaristo was arrested for the aforementioned crimes. The lawyer spent several months in pretrial detention. And in that procedure Carlos Machín Quintero was also investigated.
In 2015, a court ruling annulled a large part of the wiretapping carried out by the police. The reason was that the authorization by a judge for the extension of the telephone tapping was not included in the judicial file. González Reyes was sentenced in 2019 by the Provincial Court in a first separate piece of the aforementioned matter.
With the passage of time, Machín allegedly, according to his entourage, began a process of moving away from the nightlife businesses in La Laguna and had other projects, at least in theory. The night of his murder, the investigators found among his effects a SIM card holder for a mobile phone, which was not one of the two normally used by Machín. Hours after the execution, the victim’s wife found a telephone in a drawer in her house that she did not know existed and handed it over to the agents.
The “secret” communications between “Tito” and his former manager reached 788 in five months
The terminal was presumably used by Machín to speak, almost exclusively, with Evaristo. That is to say, it was a security telephone with which he had a communication with the lawyer and businessman that he hid from his closest environment. Said motive was the first piece of a complex investigation that allowed the agents to follow a lead to the alleged perpetrators of the murder.
The card for that phone was bought by JDSH, a son of a regular collaborator of González Reyes, according to the agents. The cell phone found by the wife of the murdered man is an old model, without an internet connection or applications, like those used by some involved in illegal operations. But JDSH also acquired other terminals with the same characteristics under her name.
One made its last connection the day before Machín’s execution and another was deactivated a couple of hours before the murder. One of those cell phones was in the name of a person residing in Evaristo’s chalet in Tacoronte. And in the victim’s agenda he was listed as Tito Tacoronte. That is the alias with which some people call Evaristo.
Another terminal, whose number ends in 806, was in the name of a false identity and the investigators believe that the real user was Evaristo, since people like his brother or his law firm partner, the lawyer Santiago M., appeared on the agenda. In life use of this mobile phone, 1,188 calls were registered. Of these, 798 were communications with the secret telephone number of Carlos Machín.
The alleged inducer and the one identified as the material author have been free since May 2022
But that mobile, whose number ends at 806, also communicated with another ending at 115, used, according to the police, by Ernesto Inocencio, the alleged perpetrator of the shots. Regarding number 604, allegedly used by Tito, it was activated in November 2017. At that time, the victim was experiencing financial difficulties, according to the investigation. For the next five months it was operational every day.
It was only turned off hours before the execution, at 7:45 p.m. And so it was for the next three days. The communications that allegedly show the involvement of the now accused are diverse. For example, after the shots were fired and the car in which they fled from La Verdellada was burned, the driver involved, JG, made eight consecutive calls to the mobile of a third man, who later facilitated their escape to the south of the island. For the Homicide Group, this is an indication that JG urgently requested the arrival of that other collaborator to get them out of Gracia, the area where the Renault Clío was burned in which witnesses saw the hitman escape.
