The councilor from Güímar defends that “if the hydroelectric plant in Güímar materializes” the municipality will benefit from “an infrastructure whose construction requires many millions of euros”, and it affects aspects that have been worrying for decades: “It would come to recover an environmentally damaged area and it would serve, in parallel, to cover the demand for water that local agriculture registers today.”
From his perspective and making a “simple reading” of what was announced, “it seems that all are positive aspects” in the fact of hosting the island’s hydroelectric power station, “but we request maximum respect and consensus with the owners and farmers of the area that will house this work, in a particular way, and with Güímar, in a general way ».

Beatriz Corredor, president of Redeia, a group to which Red Eléctrica belongs, explained the day before yesterday that “within Tenerife, studies have been carried out on different locations, but all agree that Güímar will probably be the best. Not only from the point of view of the electrical infrastructure itself, but also to recover a space that is degraded for reasons that everyone knows”, she said, referring to the existing aggregate quarries in the ravines. She clarified that “preliminary studies are being done.”
The Tenerife hydroelectric plant will occupy several of the existing holes in the Barranco de Badajoz, caused by the companies that extracted aggregate for almost half a century in such an environment. An activity that is currently affected by legal problems that affect the future of these lands. The process is pending the pronouncement of the Supreme Court.
The Chira Soria power plant, in Gran Canaria, is the reference model for the work that is planned to be carried out in the Güimarero municipality
Gustavo Pérez alludes to the fact that this infrastructure “will allow key energy storage for the future of the Island” and points out that “now it is time to work and communicate.” The mayor of Güímar refers to the Chira Soria hydroelectric plant, in Gran Canaria, as a reference model to explain the project that is to be developed in the Güímarero municipality. The investment is valued at hundreds of millions of euros.
