The Parliament of the Canary Islands unanimously approved this Tuesday a Non-Law Proposal (PNL) of Nueva Canarias (NC) requesting a set of measures to improve child and adolescent mental health care, including the creation of a free emotional support chat for young people through ‘whatsApp’ that would work 24 hours and 365 days a year and would be attended by specialists.
In addition, the text points out that it is necessary to continue implementing the Network of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Units (USM-IJ) in the islands, implementing multidisciplinary teams (specialized psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, psychiatric nurses and professionals
of social work) and guaranteeing their continuous training while favoring the stable and quality hiring of human resources.
The PNL also proposes creating short-term hospitalization units for children and adolescents (UHB-IJ) in each of the seven islands and promoting the creation of other intermediate resources such as day centers for intensive and long-term treatment for the health sector. child-juvenile population.
It also proposes promoting that the main health centers of each of the basic health zones have the amount
of clinical psychology professionals, according to the ratio established by the new Canarian Mental Health Plan, and who can facilitate access to appointments directly through the established channels such as the telephone number 012 or the app ‘CitaPrevia’ .
The last points approved call for the implementation of mental health subunits in the emergency services in the main hospitals in the Canary Islands, where there is a physical presence on duty of the specialist in Psychiatry, and to promote the creation of an inter-administrative coordination table in order to improve the population mental health.
