Several neighbors have sent their discomfort over this situation to the center and to the northern City Council, which has also contacted the Canarian Health Service (SCS) to try to solve, without success, this deficiency. The lack of unemployed pediatricians or with availability to work justifies the temporary closure of this service, which has been moved these days to the Icod de los Vinos Health Centerabout 5 kilometers away from the town center and Puerto.
Since the Primary Care Management of Tenerife EL DÍA was informed that “the municipality’s pediatric care is guaranteed and organized. The boys and girls of Garachico who have their pediatrician in the local office are being attended for scheduled consultations at your reference health centerwhich is the one of Icod of the Wines. This was reported in time and is working normally. If an emergency occurs, it can be attended in the office.
“The activity has been centralized at the Icod Health Center because the pediatrician is on days off but on January 9, 2023 the normal activity of Pediatrics at the local office. The pediatrician’s holidays could not be replaced in the office itself because there are no pediatricians available to hire, since it is one of the specialties that exists deficit throughout Spain”, they warn from the Primary Care Management.
The mayor of Garachico, Jose Heriberto Gonzalez (CC)recalls that “the management of health centers is a responsibility of the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands”, and regrets that the absence of pediatricians at Christmas is something that “happens in practically all health centers and medical offices in the region”.
“What happens with pediatricians is that, according to the SCS, there are no substitute or unemployed pediatricians in the Canary Islands. It is the same thing that is argued to explain that the demanded pediatric emergencies do not exist in the misnamed Hospital del Norte, in Icod de los Vinos. And for years I have been expressing my complaints about the state, the lack of services and the absence of necessary investments in that health center without distinguishing between political parties”, underlines the mayor.
