Deaths increased by 4.2% in the Islands and births decreased by 3.6%,

The Canary Islands registered the eighth largest negative vegetative balance recorded in the country in 2021, with 4,475 fewer births than deaths, according to the Basic Demographic Indicators published this Wednesday by the INE and collected by Europa Press.
According to this report with provisional data (revised November 2022), natural growth (births minus deaths) was negative in 2021 in all communities, except Community of Madrid (1,424), Region of Murcia (1,260) and Islands Balearic Islands (688).
Specifically, the Canary Islands recorded a decrease in the number of births of 3.6 percent last year. La Rioja, with -5.7 percent, in addition to Ceuta, where they fell 14.7 percent, were the regions with the greatest decreases.
The total number of births registered in the Canary Islands last year reached 12,703, compared to 13,178 in 2020; 14,137 in 2019; 14,775 in 2018; 15,779 in 2017; 16,159 in 2016 and 16,146 in 2015. In 2010, the Canary Islands reached 20,127 births, the highest figure in the data series offered by the INE.
The number of births increased in 2021 in five communities led by Aragón (3.9%), followed by Comunidad Foral de Navarra (1.5%), Balearic Islands (0.6%), Region of Murcia (0.6% ) and Principality of Asturias (0.2%), while in the rest of the autonomous regions they fell, as did the average, which fell by 1.3 percent.
As for deaths, the Canary Islands registered an increase of 4.2 percent, the second highest rise in the country, surpassed in this case by Ceuta (-25.2%) and above the Balearic Islands (3.1%).
In total, the Canary Archipelago registered 17,718 deaths in 2021, compared to 16,486 the previous year, the first of the pandemic; 15,756 in 2019; 16,310 in 2018; 15,254 in 2017; 15,035 in 2016 and 15,110 in 2015. In the year 2000, the Canary Islands reached 12,030 deaths, the lowest figure in the data series offered by the INE.
