The storm leaves the workers of the Aemet locked up in the Mount Teide. The low temperatures, around five degrees below zerohave caused the Izaña meteorological center, at the summit of Tenerifehas been blocked by ice.
The facilities, both the scientific observation instrumentation and the building, have been covered in a layer of ice thanks to storm Celiawhich in many cases, as a result of the intense wind that blows in the area, has led to the phenomenon known as gales.
As reported by the center itself through its Twitter account, around nine in the morning the staff was able to unlock the ice and snow door and access the outside, which was already covered in a white blanket.
At that moment, the thermometers were still below zero, although somewhat less icy than during the early morning. That yes, the chicellada that was installed in the entrance porch prevented the staff from leaving.
The Meteorology Statal Agency (Aemet) explains that it was one of the workers, Antonio Alcántara, who was in charge of unlocking the door, given the circumstance that it is the first snow and cold storm that the center endures. He and Antonio Perdigón will remain in Izaña since the closure of the access roads to the Teide National Park prevents the usual handover between workers from taking place.
The temperature reached in Izaña during the early morning has touched five degrees below zero and although the wind has not been so intense at the moment, it has blown strongly until it has touched 130 kilometers per hour.
