The 16th “Canaries” Brigade (BRICAN XVI) celebrates this Tuesday, February 1, the fourteenth anniversary of its creation, with various events that have taken place on the islands of Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventurato, as well as in the Miguel de Cervantes Base (Lebanon) where a large part of the personnel of the units that compose it are currently deployed.
The scheduled acts of the youngest Brigade of the Army and the most decorated in this century, were carried out in compliance with the preventive measures established against COVID-19.
Since its creation, it has participated in numerous international missions, five of them in Afghanistanno, two in Mali, one in Iraq and one in Lebanon, where since last November he has been once again leading the Spanish contingent “Libre Hidalgo XXXVI”, under the command of General Ramon Armada Vazquez Chief of the 16th “Canarias” Brigade.
During this last year, the BRICAN XVI has continued its unconditional support to the civilian population, highlighting the “Operation Cumbre Vieja” where work has been carried out to remove ashes, set up camps and donate various materials and food, always in support of society on the island of La Palma.
It also continues to work within the framework of the Operation “Baluarte Mission”, leading the Epidemiological Surveillance Unit (UVE) in the Canarian Archipelago, with tasks of tracking and monitoring COVID-19 cases, in addition to increasing its contribution at the beginning of 2022 through different Mobile Vaccination Teams (EMV) in order to support in the vaccination campaign of the Ministry of Health to intensify the immunization process against COVID 19 on the islands.
The units that make up the BRICAN XVI are located on different islands of the Canary archipelago, as follows: the “Soria” 9th Infantry Regiment in Fuerteventura; in Tenerife, the 49th “Tenerife” Infantry Regiment, the 93rd Field Artillery Regiment, together with the XVI Sappers Battalion; and the Infantry Regiment “Canarias” 50, the XVI Logistics Group, the XVI General Headquarters Battalion, together with the BRICAN XVI General Headquarters on the Island of Gran Canaria.
