Santiago del Teide is already counting down the days for the opening of the Almond Blossom campaign, a long-awaited event in the municipality in the months of January and February, the time of year when winter shows off its most spring-like face in the midlands and high areas, with the flowering of hundreds of trees that provide spectacular shades of pink and white in their branches.
“The flowering of the almond tree is one of the most important events in the municipality and has a great impact at the island level. For us, it is also a key product within our commitment to ecotourism”, said Emilio Navarro, mayor of Santiago del Teide, yesterday at the campaign presentation ceremony.
The alderman, accompanied by the Councilor for Commerce, Krysten Martín, and the mayor for Culture, Sergio Mendoza, described the program of events designed by the City Council as “very complete” and recommended visiting the municipality in the near future “to enjoy the show of colors of the almond blossoms next to the lava flows”.
Krysten Martín highlighted the “historical” and “economic” role of almonds in the life of Santiago del Teide. “Now comes the flowering, which is beautiful, but in the summer is the time of harvesting, which is very important for many families, especially for the elderly who get financial help with the almond, which is of great quality, as they recognize gastronomy professionals”, explained the mayor to this newspaper. In this sense, Navarro underlined the dynamic character, from the economic point of view, of the flowering of the almond tree. “It generates wealth and work for our neighbors and neighbors,” he stressed.
Almost a month
Among the planned activities, which will take place between January 22 and February 20, the routes stand out (of different levels of difficulty and classified as long, short and themed), the first of which will take place next Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
The program also includes photo and story contests, agricultural and craft markets (as long as COVID-19 alert levels allow), almond cocktail exhibitions, and gastronomic workshops and samples, in collaboration with the Association of Cooks and Pastry Chefs. de Canarias and the Barman Association of Tenerife, in which a total of 22 establishments from the upper area of the municipality will participate.
