The Council opens a consultation with citizens to develop the Island’s Sustainable Mobility Plan from Tenerife. For the responsible director, Enrique Arriaga placeholder image, «Constitutes the basic element of strategic sector planning that it will allow to establish the model of organization and management for the next twenty years».
Mobility has begun the drafting of a key document, although the initial work will be the implementation of a process of citizen participation. Public groups, entities and individuals will be able to make contributions and respond to different questions about transportation and mobility on the Island. The Citizen Participation area collaborates in this process, which offers support with the platform that hosts the consultation and provides assistance in drafting the questions. that make up the questionnaire.
For Arriaga, «the Island Sustainable Mobility Plan will be made with an optics of sustainability and a focus on the empowerment and improvement of public transport, as well as the connections between all the modes including the private one. In addition, he adds that it is “a key document to avoid congestion problems.” Likewise, “it will allow us to know quantitatively and qualitatively what the situation in terms of mobility is; for example, the number of vehicles, travel or public transport available ”.
Based on a diagnosis of the current situation and taking into account the citizen contributions, the guidelines for the organization and management of mobility at the island level and the possible alternatives will be proposed, in order, after the corresponding evaluation, to define precisely the elements of the proposed alternative.
The insular director of Mobility, José Alberto León, points out, for his part, that “the inconveniences related to mobility greatly affect the population of Tenerife and its visitors with environmental effects and quality of life.” It underlines that “the continued increase in vehicles on the island’s roads and its consequent problems with traffic, parking and retentions has made mobility one of the main challenges for finding alternatives beyond the construction of new roads.” León adds: «The proposals and contributions collected during the period of citizen participation will be analyzed; those that are considered interesting and enriching could be included in the development of the plan ”.
The Island Plan for Sustainable Mobility will also consider how to make the transition from buses to less polluting models; plans in this area for companies and educational or commercial centers, as well as, for example, new technologies applied to mobility.
