Canary Islands Residents Demand New Housing Law with 6,000 Signatures Presented by ASCAV

Santa Cruz de Tenerife 21. (Press Europa) –

ASCAV submitted to the Parliament of the Canary Islands on Monday a total of 6,067 signatures from individuals and 685 statements from associations, federations, and local companies, in a bid for a “limited and urgent” moratorium lasting one year, along with a request for negotiations on a new draft law concerning holiday rentals.

This was revealed to journalists by the president, Doris Borrego, who noted that the current activity classification is unmanageable for owners, given that the homes already registered are “fully solidified.”

She also highlighted that all apartments and bungalows marketed separately within complexes, which lack an exploitation unit, are also eligible for holiday rentals.

Borrego emphasised that the level of citizen participation regarding the new legislation “has been remarkable,” with over 5,000 comments on the draft, 67% of which were opposed.

She pointed out that participation in the parliamentary process was possible, and despite its “arduous and challenging” nature, more than 990 comments were submitted within a few days. This, in her view, demonstrates that “Canarian families must remain involved in the tourism sector of the Canary Islands, as the funds generated stay here and they have every right to benefit from such a vital economic activity as tourism.”

The president of the Association stressed that the owners of holiday rentals are not the “primary causes” of the housing shortage in the Canary Islands, citing that there are 30,000 homes available for sale, 211,000 vacant properties, and over 40% of homes previously rented to Canarian families have exited the market due to a housing law that provides no legal security for owners.
