Tenerife Cabildo Passes €96 Million Credit Change Amid PSOE Opposition and Vox Abstention

The proposal comprises a funding allocation of 70 million euros intended for investments, which the socialists assert will help reconcile the differences in the coalition agreement.

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 31st October (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Plenary Session of the Tenerife Cabildo approved a credit amendment amounting to 96 million euros this Thursday, with backing from CC and PP, the PSOE’s rejection, and Vox’s decision to abstain.

The island’s treasury director, Juan Carlos Pérez Frías, argued that this credit amendment is derived from pre-allocated resources, increased revenue, and a 70 million euros credit operation that will be incorporated into the 2025 budget to enhance the corporation’s investment capacity amid signs of “moderation” in economic activity.

Pérez Frías specified that this modification encompasses, among other aspects, 300,000 euros for organising a new technologies forum – which he clarified is separate from the potential awards gala for the YouTuber The Grefg that Tenerife is vying for – as well as one million euros for drafting the technical project aimed at improving the Adán Martín Auditorium, a project that might later be transferred to architect Santiago Calatrava if necessitated by the legal claim for damages initiated by the Cabildo.

He reproached the socialists for having made “little progress” on this matter in the last term and insisted that it is now time to take steps to enhance the Auditorium.

Moreover, the plan includes 8.5 million euros allocated for road works, one million euros for the BUS-HOV lane of the TF-5, 1.8 million euros for renovating bus stops, 200,000 euros for constructing park and ride facilities next to the TF-5, 1.9 million euros for upgrading the Heliodoro Rodríguez López, 3.2 million euros for the construction of the Cidemat, and an additional 3.1 million euros in an agreement with Icavi to promote housing construction.

The PSOE spokesperson, Aarón Afonso, has questioned the approach taken by the governing team regarding the credit modifications and the 70 million euros loan, which he claims aims to “bridge the discrepancies” within the government pact in order to facilitate the approval of next year’s budget.

He expressed that the Council’s dedication to the development of public housing is “inadequate”, demanding 15.5 million euros to initiate a municipal sanitation scheme rather than a subsidy system, and emphasised the “urgent” need to reorganise the intersection in the La Rambla neighbourhood, located in the island’s north, to enhance safety.

AFONSO HIGHLIGHTS BUDGET NON-EXECUTION

Afonso has levelled criticisms at the governing group’s budgetary non-execution, which is estimated to be nearly four million euros from this proposal, and claimed that the Cabildo has attempted to “retreat” by reducing the funding figure for The Grefg to 300,000 euros, now awaiting clarification regarding the awards – the socialists originally stated that the figure was 1.2 million euros based on the documentation they had reviewed.

Concerning the Auditorium, he accused the government of “publicly stating one thing” while submitting something entirely different in the proposals, while also expressing confusion as to why the deadlines given to Calatrava to rectify the property damage are being prolonged.

Additionally, he criticised the cessation of funds for employment – despite the Cabildo having established a new employment plan worth nearly 10 million euros – along with the issue of administrative decentralisation.
